Ebor Festival 2026: what the data says about York's big four
York's Ebor Festival runs Wednesday 19 to Saturday 22 August — four days, three Group 1s, and Europe's richest staying handicap to close it. This is the data groundwork, published early so you can check every claim against our live tools before the declarations firm up.
The draw at York: real, measured, and not fully priced in
Our York draw-bias page covers three years of results by stall third, and the detail matters more than the folklore:
- 5–6f: low stalls strongly favoured (IV 1.37) — and not fully priced in (A/E 1.18 against Betfair prices). For the Nunthorpe on Friday, that's the one draw number at the festival worth building a shortlist around.
- 9–12f: the low bias is just as strong (IV 1.38) and still slightly underpriced (A/E 1.07) — relevant to the big-field mile-plus handicaps through the week.
- 7–8f: the bias is real (IV 1.22) but the market already pays for it (A/E 0.94) — knowing a bias exists isn't the same as being paid to follow it.
- Staying trips (13f+, the Ebor's own band): a mild low edge (IV 1.16) that the market actually over-bets (A/E 0.80, small 35-race sample) — don't pay a premium for a low draw in the Ebor itself.
The each-way maths on a 22-runner Ebor
The Ebor Handicap saddles 20–22 runners, which triggers the friendliest standard each-way terms in racing: 4 places at 1/4 odds. Our 1.2-million-runner place-terms study found this exact shape — 16+ runner handicaps with horses at 10/1–20/1 — is the one place the terms have historically leaned the punter's way (place half ≈ +17% at exchange prices). If you make one each-way bet at the festival, the Ebor is structurally the right race for it; the 5–7 runner Group races are structurally the wrong ones. Every racecard on the site now flags this per race.
The big four, by their recent winners
Juddmonte International (Wed, Group 1, 1m2½f). The festival's rating peak: Baaeed (2022), Mostahdaf (2023), City Of Troy (2024), Anmaat at 7/2 (2025). Four of the last five winners came from the top three in the betting — this is a race where class talks and shocks are rare.
Yorkshire Oaks (Thu, Group 1, 1m4f). Aidan O'Brien has won four of the last five (Snowfall 2021, Warm Heart 2023, Content 2024, Minnie Hauk 2025 — the interruption was Alpinista in 2022). Epsom/Irish Oaks form is the template; oppose Ballydoyle here only with a very good reason.
Nunthorpe Stakes (Fri, Group 1, 5f). The opposite personality: Winter Power, Highfield Princess, 28/1 Live In The Dream, Bradsell, and the Australian mare Asfoora in 2025 — five different yards in five years, with genuine prices winning. Pace and the draw (see above) matter more than reputation over York's five furlongs. This is the Group 1 where the market is most beatable.
Ebor Handicap (Sat, 1m6f). The modern pattern is unmistakable: Willie Mullins has won two of the last three (Absurde 2023, Ethical Diamond 2025) and Henry de Bromhead took 2024 with Magical Zoe — jumps yards raiding with quality dual-purpose stayers the flat handicapper struggles to pin down. Trawlerman (2022) is the recent exception that proves the profile still needs a proper staying engine.
