“It took us three attempts at 1m2f to work out that he wants a mile! Epictetus showed plenty of speed over a mile at two, and we thought he was a horse who'd progress to 1m2f this year obviously that did not pan out - he has run good races but not what we thought that he was capable of. Dropping down in trip on ground that suited him worked today. Obviously there is a mile race back here, the Celebration Mile, which fits in well - Thady Gosden, joint-trainer.”

“The ground was deep and Epictetus has not trained on anything like that this year. This has been the plan for him all year and we'll go to the Dante Stakes next. He may well be more of a Prix du Jockey Club horse but we'll see. “I thought they might go that way, I was walking the track with Aidan and I told Frankie be careful, they're going to turn right out of the gate and use the stands' rail. Epictetus has run great. He's still an immature horse, he's still on the weak side and the ground found him out but he's a grand horse for next year. “Epictetus wasn't wound up for the race and we have to be absolutely overjoyed with him. He was very professional and Martin (Harley) gave him a lovely ride.
