Jan Brueghel
High-class performer who has a record of 6-8 overall and 2-3 at Group 1 level, adding to his 2024 St Leger win when knuckling down the better to beat Calandagan in this contest (good to soft) 12 months ago; combination of cheekpieces and setting an unsuitably steady pace perhaps contributed to his King George defeat behind that rival; reappearance success in the Ormonde at Chester (1m5f, good) sets him up nicely for another Coronation Cup bid.

From the connections
“Jan Brueghal has a good record but he was off since the King George where things went wrong. It was nice to get him back today and that was a good performance - Ryan Moore, jockey, speaking to Sky Sports Racing.Ryan [Moore] was delighted with Jan Brueghal and obviously we'll plan to go to the Coolmore Coronation Cup on Derby Day - Kevin Buckley, Coolmore UK representative, speaking to Sky Sports Racing.”
“Jan Brueghel is very tough and Ryan [Moore] gave him a class ride, but you know he doesn't surrender. He'd improved a lot from the last day, and you could see he was pricking his ears at the finish. He ran a lovely race first time back when it was only a mile and a quarter and he got beat by a good horse of Joseph's [O'Brien]. It was a bit unfair to pitch him in early over a mile and a quarter, but we just needed to get him out. He's a very brave horse and if you pass him slowly, you're in trouble. Ryan gave him an incredible ride, balanced him and got him in a lovely rhythm, and you can see him starting to come from a long way out. Everyone knew before the race that it was going to be a good gallop, and Wayne [Lordan, on Continuous] was there to make sure it was a good gallop. All anyone wanted was for it to be a solidly run, evenly run race, and then we'd see. Then we'd know after the race what to do next, what distance to go for next time, what to not do. The worst thing is when you come out of a race and you say, 'But if they'd gone a good pace, then?' that's a problem for everybody. He's a very good tough horse who was unbeaten last year, and he'd still be unbeaten if I hadn't run him too early at The Curragh this year. - Aidan O'Brien, trainer.Jan Brueghel stays this trip very well and he's an uncomplicated horse. Aidan had him, as he always does, in unbelievable shape. He showed a great attitude. The second horse is a very talented horse and I am sure he'll win a big race soon. The ground, being just on the slower side of good, suited him and he stayed on really well - Ryan Moore, jockey.”
“We knew the track would suit and the trip would suit. I think Jan Brueghel showed he's successful going that extra distance and I think he's a Gold Cup horse in the making. Don't be surprised if he steps up a bit next year, But he has a bit of class and he's done that really well - Sean Levey, rider.”
“Jan Brueghel was very green. I didn't really want to make the running because he was a bit raw. The horse in front stopped and I was kind of left there and he was waiting. It was a difficult track for him and he's carried a penalty too, so you'd have to be happy with what he's done. He'll get better still. There's definitely more class in there, you've just got to get it out of him - Ryan Moore, rider.”
“We were worried about the ground for Jan Brueghel. We knew he had improved a lot from the last day and that he'd stay further but we weren't sure about the ground. You could see him changing legs when he turned in. He will stay much further and will be very happy going a mile and a half. We were thinking of coming here and then on to Goodwood and then going to the Leger - Aidan O'Brien, trainer.”
“Jan Brueghel just wasn't straightforward to train, he took a bit of time, he's a big horse. He's probably a fair horse - Aidan O'Brien, trainer.”
