Lambourn
Most wins on good ground but has form on soft; held on by only a neck from Bay City Roller on better terms in the Huxley (1m2f Group 2) at Chester on seasonal debut but proved game in first-time cheekpieces and, based on Ryan Moore's post-race comments, will come on for the run; notable contender in the retained headgear returned to the scene of his biggest moment, namely a clearcut success in last year's Derby (followed up in the Irish version).

From the connections
“Lambourn won the Vase here last year and won two Derbies. He was trained for the Leger after but didn't stay that day. It was nice to bring him back here though hard bringing him back that far in distance. He was a little bit rusty but he kept finding and he'll improve from today and we can look forward to the rest of the year with him - Ryan Moore, jockey, speaking to Sky Sports Racing.Lambourn didn't make it easy for Ryan at stages and he hit the rail just round the bend. But Ryan always knew he had all bases covered. The concern was the drop in trip but he's been here before - and from the crowd and the atmosphere it was great to see a dual Derby winner here. Obviously he'll get stepped up in trip next time and is likely to be targeting the Coronation Cup, that would be the natural next step - Kevin Buckley, Coolmore UK representative.”
“Lambourn is a straightforward horse, we know his running style, he's behind the bit. He travelled sweetly today and we were in a lovely rhythm all the way down the back and I started to pick it up. Things were going well but Tom was always there breathing down my neck and I didn't feel like I went through the two pole as well as I'd like to. He just kind of stayed on so there's a question mark over whether he actually stayed the trip or not - Sean Levey, jockey.”
“They went very slow. Lambourn is a high-tempo, mile-and-a-half horse. Everything was perfect with him; we wanted to get a racecourse run or gallop in him before the Leger or the Arc. The race was kind of a mess really. It was a hack around to halfway, then a sprint up the stretch - Aidan O'Brien, trainer.”
“Lambourn is just so laid-back, I can't tell you. Ryan gave him a lovely, uncomplicated, straightforward ride. He knew him to a tee from winning on him at Chester and everything Wayne [Lordan] told him. He's so relaxed, and the horse coming with him [Sir Dinadan] was only going to help him, and you can see he was pricking his ears all the way up the straight. I knew Ryan would be very happy about that as he would have been delighted to have company and would love to get into a battle. He has that personality, that attitude, it's like everything in life when sports people have that attitude and he's that straightforward, genuine and just does whatever you want for you, whenever he can. He's like his dad, if you put him in first gear, he stays in first gear; if you put him in third gear, he'll stay in third gear. He's not influenced by anything around him, but always wants to please and never overdo himself. He could be a King George or an Arc type of horse. The way he races, I'd imagine he'd race that way regardless of the trip. You'd imagine he'd get further but he has lots of class - Aidan O'Brien, trainer.”
“Australia [Lambourn's sire] is a great Derby winner, very genuine, and that's what Lambourn is - uncomplicated, genuine and committed. He always has been. His runs this year have been very good - he was second to Delacroix, and then was very impressive in Chester. Chester again - you have to be on your game and you have to stay, and that's the way he was. Ryan loved him in Chester and he obviously can't ride them all. He was always going to be an Irish Derby horse, a Leger horse, and Wayne said he definitely would stay further. He saves plenty for himself and he gives himself a chance to get any trip - Aidan O'Brien, trainer.”
“Lambourn looked a thorough stayer and while he was a little on and off the bridle, once the penny dropped he came home really strongly. He got the trip really well and he's gone through the line nicely. We'll just have to see how they all get on in the trials but we were thinking of sending him to Epsom as they learn so much when they go to Chester - Aidan O'Brien, trainer.”
