Carmers
Won his first three races around this time last year, notably 1m6f Group 2 Queen's Vase; better again in defeat when second in 1m4f Great Voltigeur and fifth to Scandinavia in St Leger; not quite at same level on last month's seasonal return behind same rival in Navan Listed; visor now replaces blinkers.

From the connections
“I knew Carmers would stay and I knew turning in Billy [Lee] looked comfortable and I was happy to see the horse come outside him and just not have him at the front and that he was able to get a breather into him round the bottom. He looked comfortable when the bell rang and I was thinking we had a chance. I think staying is his game and he's a pretty good horse. He's done everything we've asked of him and he will have an entry in the St Leger at Doncaster and we'll see, he's done what we've asked him to do today; he's run three times and won three times and hopefully he'll continue doing it - Paddy Twomey, trainer.Race went to plan all the way, jumped well, had a great position, when Harry came around I just let Carmers go on and was able to just hack away but got him rolling early from five out just to get him going forward; he takes a while to build up a head of steam and I know he'd stay well. I wanted to stretch them so I was always going to try and make it a stamina test and you can see him there pricking his ears going to the line, just doing enough. Staying was always going to be a forte of his. He's so laid back at home, he wouldn't pass out the dog at home, he's just that type of character, he saves plenty. I knew when I got stuck into him he'd keep finding away - Billy Lee, jockey.”
“He's a horse who des just what he has to do, hence the headgear. I thought Carmers would be in the first three at Ballinrobe but he surprised me how well he won at the line. He came home, licked the pot, rode out this week and didn't care so we decided to come here and see what happens. We knew he'd stay but we didn't want to make it, he's a horse who probably doesn't want to be in front too long. To be fair he kept on well, he's keeping plenty to himself. The Queen's Vase is probably the race for him - Paddy Twomey, trainer, speaking to Racing TV”
